Say hello to Melinda James, Revenue Manager for the Hyatt Regency Albuquerque. Read on to learn what makes her tick!
Interview with Melinda James
Q: Where are you originally from?
My father is from Albuquerque but moved to Fortaleza, Brazil where he met and fell in love with mom. Together they created 10 children including me! Our family moved back to New Mexico when I was 9 and I fell in love with the culture, food and beautiful weather. I consider myself a local and have dubbed New Mexico my forever home.
Q: When you’re not keeping your finger on the pulse of Hyatt’s revenue how do you spend your time?
I love long distance running and average 5 miles a day but if I can sneak away I’ll hit the range with my compound bow. But my favorite things to do include taking my two kids fishing and getting messy with arts and crafts.
Q: Tell us about your prior experience in this industry (or any other industries).
I began my career in hotels selling time shares for Wyndham. I went on to work in multiple capacities for Courtyard by Marriott, then Embassy Suites Albuquerque where I developed an interest in revenue management. After completing the self-paced courses provided by Hilton university I was offered the position of Corporate Revenue Coordinator for Heritage Hotels & Resorts. I was soon promoted to revenue manager of our Taos properties, El Monte Sagrado and Palacio de Marquesa before coming to Hyatt.
Q: How long have you been with Hyatt? With Hyatt Regency Albuquerque?
I was appointed the Revenue Manager of Hyatt mid-August of this year, however I’ve been with Heritage since 2014.
Q: What was it about the company and the property that attracted you to this position?
I’ve always excelled in economics and mathematics and was attracted to the role of Revenue Manager because I can utilize and strengthen these skills.
Q: What is your favorite thing about the industry or your job in general?
Typically in revenue analytics you have minimal face-to-face interaction with people. I love having the opportunity ever day to do what I love (working with numbers) and meet new people. It’s interesting to see first-hand how revenue strategy affects our operations teams and our guests.
Q: If you had to choose one thing that you feel makes your property so unique, what would it be?
This property is unique due the fact that we operate under the Hyatt franchise flag but are managed locally by Heritage Hotels & Resorts. It’s nice to know who I am working for and what their values are.
